Kitesurfing is easy and a great experience. Don’t be put off by video shots of professionals doing amazing stunts. The basics are fairly straightforward and you will be able to learn them in just a few days and then you will be able to enjoy the sport from the very first day of your next holiday.
Marsa Alam is a perfect location for it. Why ?
REASONS TO CHOOSE MARSA ALAM

2. The Red Sea has the warmest average water temperatures of any open water sea in the world, great in summer and still very mild in winter.
3. Beautiful reefs form some great natural barriers to create perfect flat water within large lagoons.
4. Between 360 and 365 days of sunshine a year with an average of almost 11 hours a day.
5. Crystal clear waters allow you to judge the sea depth.
6. Enjoy the fantastic background of the immense Sahara desert.

BEST TIMES OF THE YEAR
Marsa Alam enjoys favourable winds for much of the year, making it a great destination for wind-dependent activities. The prime season runs from April to October, when sea temperatures are at their warmest and the winds generally blow with greater consistency—though be prepared, as the heat on the beach can be intense on some days.
Even in winter, you’re still likely to get more breezy days than calm ones. That said, wind patterns at any time of year can be unpredictable, so if you’re visiting for just a short stay, a bit of luck always helps.”
WIND AND WEATHER CONDITIONS
The summer is hot with average maximum temperatures in August of 35 C and an average water temperature of 29 C and still very mild in winter with average maximum temperatures of 23 C in January with an average water temperature also of 23 C.
Winds are usually from the north but check the forecast. Here is the forecast for the next two to three days from WindAlert.com. You can also check out predicted wind speeds and directions and the general weather conditions for the next week at Marsa Alam Airport (which is near Port Ghalib) at the following web page.
If you want to know what type of weather to expect several weeks from now – check out our detailed weather and climate page.
BEST LOCATIONS
There is a coastal fringe reef which stretches for hundreds of miles north and south of Marsa Alam and there are only a few places where there is a sandy beach with direct walk in access into a sandy lagoon with a protective reef. Here are the best of them.

2. EL NAABA LAGOON
Near Three Corners Equinox Resort
A deep water lagoon about 30 km north of Marsa Alam town, 30 km south of Marsa Alam airport and 1 km south of Three Corners Equinox Resort. It’s separated from the open sea by a coral reef. The water is normally flat but a little choppy when the wind is strong.
There is Giant Bay suitable for the experienced and experts and Baby Bay a little further to the south with its’ super flat waters which is better for beginners and those wishing to perfect more complicated moves.
There are kite surfing lessons and guidance available for all levels of experience – please contact Steven at steven@marsaalam.com or via WhatsApp on +20 102 999 9978 or by phone on +20 128 433 2337 [More info on the lagoon here.]

3. LAHAMI BAY
Here, some 140 km south of Marsa Alam town, the reef forms a large lagoon (around 2 X 3 km), which, when wind speeds are light or moderate, makes for near perfect flat waters, mostly of wadable depth. Please note however that the water can be a little choppy when there is a strong wind. Entrance to the lagoon is from a sandy beach, so there’s no difficulty in access.
Advanced kitesurfers might like to explore the deeper waters and the mangrove shorelines while beginners are advised to follow closely the advice of their instructors and to keep to the lagoon.
During July and August water levels drop making the area available for kitesurfing restricted to a narrower channel area.
There are kitesurfing lessons and guidance available for all levels of experience – please contact Steven at steven@marsaalam.com or via WhatsApp on +201284332337.
4. BLUE LAGOON NEAR BY HOTEL DREAM LAGOON BEACH
Situated some 20 km south of Marsa Alam town. The reef is around 800 metres from the shore, slightly restricting the area available but the bottom is sandy and the water usually fairly flat although choppy when the wind is strong.
If you are interested in surfing here contact Kite Mood and Kite centre info@kitemood.com or visit their website. They might be able to arrange for a discount for a room if you wish to stay at Dream Lagoon Resort. As of 9 May 2025, you can book a 75 minute introductory lesson (theory and first fly) for 75 euro here.
Regrading the highest probability of a windy day Kite Mood’s website suggests mid-May to June or September to mid-October, but also explains that between January and March and November and December you can get even stronger winds but with a lower daily probability of wind, though still it claims “the highest in Egypt.” It adds the peak summer holiday months of June and July can be “insanely hot but the wind is super steady then as well.”
WHAT DOES A KITESURFING HOLIDAY INVOLVE ?
A four day course is usually sufficient for a complete beginner to become a safe and confident kiteboarder. The initial instruction session usually involves practising with a small trainer kit on land. Do bear in mind that lessons do depend on local weather and sea conditions and so it might not always be possible to complete a course on consecutive days.
