LOCATION

Shams Alam Resort was one of the first hotels to be built in the region in the late 1990s, so they were able to bag a near perfect location, 45 km (28 miles) south of the town of Marsa Alam and about 110 km (68 miles) south of Marsa Alam Airport in the wildlife rich Wadi El Gemal National Park.

ROOM FACILITIES

Rooms were built to a traditional Arabesque design with domed ceilings and Islamic furniture.  The facilities include air conditioning, in-room safe, private bathroom,  mini-bar,  satellite TV, 24 hour room service, a small seating area, blackout curtains, a mosquito net and balconies or terrace with a sea view. 

Facilities for the disabled are available. There are wheelchair accessible ground floor rooms, but rooms on upper floors are accessible by stairs only.

HOTEL FACILITIES

Shams Alam boasts a 1 km long private beach and surprisingly extensive grounds. As one Polish guest commented on Tripadvisor in March 2024, the area would have been large enough to have accommodated four hotels had the resort been built on the more developed Hurghada or Sharm coastlines.

The resort offers all plenty of facilities, including the usual main buffet restaurant which provides (to cite one travel website) “many lip-smacking dishes to its guests”, an outdoor swimming pool, a 24 hour front desk,  a coffee shop which serves drinks and snacks, a spa offering a sauna and massage, dry cleaning and laundry services,  a weekly oriental show, horse riding, camel riding, a children’s play area, squash, a gaming room with table tennis and billiards tables, beach volleyball, a Roman Theatre, free parking, shops and a Bedouin tent.

There’s a great choice of bars for anyone who likes to be always near a drink – The Oriental shisha bar, The Palm Bar, The Diving Bar and two pool bars.  Those interested in diving or snorkelling will be pleased to discover the PADI accredited Wadi Gimal diving centre on the beach, which can provide diving and snorkelling lessons.

On TripAdvisor, as of 28 May 2026, Shams Alam had a traveller ranking of 62nd out of 116 hotels (or 29th of 41 resorts) in the Marsa Alam region based on travellers’ ratings, with a respectable average rating of 4.0 out of 5 bubbles, based on 1,331 reviews, and a reassuring 78.8% of reviewers rating it as either “very good” or “excellent,” while only 9.1% of reviewers rated it as either “poor” or “terrible.”

ON BOOKING.COM

Meanwhile on Booking.com, as of 28 May 2026, Shams Alam Resort was rated at a “fabulous” score of 8.7, out of a maximum of 10, based on 457 reviews, up from an already “very good” score of 8.5 in June 2025. Although I wasn’t able to find the ratings broken down for the various categories of hotel facilities and services, the previous time I checked in June 2025, the resort achieved the following scores, also out of a maximum of 10 – highest first. However, please bear in mind that, given the overall improvement in the resort score since June 2025, it is likely some or all of these categories may also have improved significantly on an already impressive performance.

ON GOOGLE AND HOLIDAYCHECK

As of 28 May 2026, Shams Alam Resort had obtained an encouraging result of 4.4 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews based on 1066 reviews.

Meanwhile on Holidaycheck.de, the resort scored an impressive 5.2 out of a maximum six stars, based on 1,626 reviews (as of 28 May 2026). A reassuring 93% of reviewers said that they would recommend the hotel with the following scores, also out of a maximum of six, for the various categories – highest first. 

ON TRIP.COM

As of 28 May 2026, Shams Alam Resort’s rating on Trip.com reflected closely its result on Holidaycheck, with an average rating of 8.6 out of 10 (up from 8.4 in June 2025), but based on only 52 reviews, with the same 8.6 score in all four categories of cleanliness, amenities, location and service. The website described 46 of the reviews (over 88%) as “positive”, and only 6 (under 12%) as “negative.”

ON TOPHOTELS.RU

As of 28 May 2026, Shams Alam Resort scored a good overall performance on Tophotels.ru, achieving an average rating of 4.23 out of 5, but based on only 37 reviews. 27 of 30 reviewers (90%) recommended the resort and only 2 (less than 7%) stated that they would not recommend the hotel. The resort achieved the following scores out of a maximum of five for the various categories.
